When Life Feels Empty

When my frum clients struggle to find meaning in their lives, I ask them a question that shocks them to their core. What would your life be about if you didn't believe in God? What would your values be? What would you be getting out of bed for every day?

Why is this crucial? If you grew up frum, you were taught at a young age what your values are supposed to be as a frum person. Most of the time, for Jews, they were raised to value learning Torah, Davening, doing Mitzvos, etc..

That eliminates the need for you to search and discover for yourself what is important. If the ideas you were raised with resonated with you and you made them your own, life will be filled with meaning. If not, you're in a confusing place. In your head you believe that certain things are important in life, but your heart is empty.

You won't work to discover what your values are, because in your mind, you have that all worked out- you can rattle that off in your sleep. You may even do all those things. But what you believe is supposed to be of paramount importance is not important to you. It doesn't fill you.

That can cause life to feel meaningless. If what you believe to be the ultimate purpose feels empty to you, what hope is there for a meaningful life? You believe that you've already discovered the only things that have meaning in life yet those same things don't sustain you. Where do you go from there?
